understanding by design

Understanding By Design (UBD) or backward curriculum design consists of three steps:

  1. Identify desired outcome.

  2. Determine assessment evidence.

  3. Plan learning experiences and instruction.

To me, this is the most logical design model and the one I naturally tend toward.  Here is a scenario in which I would train elementary teachers on the use of technology in the classroom.

*SCENARIO: * Help elementary teachers identify technology for classroom use. Train teachers on implementing technology-based learning.

**STEP 1: IDENTIFY DESIRED RESULTS

Teachers will use technology in the classroom to improve student learning.

*STEP 2: DETERMINE A METHOD OF ASSESSMENT *

  1. Teachers will identify an area of curriculum they would like to improve. Focus: Reading, spelling, math facts

  2. Teachers will analyze technology-based options to improve student learning.

  3. Teachers will explain rationale for their choice.

  4. Teachers will create a tracking system to monitor student usage and growth.

  5. Teachers will implement technology into their curriculum.

*STEP 3: PLAN INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES *

Hold a teacher in-service day focused on tech in the classroom.

  1. Teachers will review record-keeping systems and recent test scores to find an area of their curriculum that needs improvement.

  2. Using the school computer lab, training center, or set of tablets, teachers will work with a partner in the same discipline to explore various programs for students.

  3. Divided into small groups, they will explain the rationale for their choice.

  4. Now with a grade level peer, teachers will discuss tracking systems and generate ideas.

  5. Finally, teachers will return to their own classrooms to set up systems and prepare for students.
